Bunions occur when the first metatarsal bone starts drifting outward because the muscle is not strong enough to hold its position. This changes the alignment of your big toe joint, causing the big toe to curve toward the second toe. With your toe out of position, inflammation occurs in the big toe joint. This process is not always noticeable—in fact, many bunions form without causing you any pain whatsoever.
Arthritic bunions are caused when arthritis forms in the big toe joint. This limits the range of motion of your joints and prevents your big toe from bending properly while you walk. Tailor's bunions (also known as bunionettes) are formed in similar conditions as regular bunions. The difference between the two is that tailor bunions occur on the outside of the foot at the fifth metatarso-phalangeal joint.
